Dedicated Course on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Advancing Sustainability Education Through Dedicated SDG Curriculum

Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (Deemed to be University) (VMRF (DU)) recognises the importance of educating students about global sustainability challenges and the role of higher education in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As part of its commitment to sustainability education, VMRF (DU) offers a separate mandatory course on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for undergraduate students in Arts and Science programmes. The course provides structured learning on the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and introduces students to the 17 interconnected goals, their objectives and targets, and their relevance to society.

Course Objectives

The course aims to:

  • Develop an understanding of the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
  • Create awareness of global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change and environmental degradation.
  • Explain the importance of quality education, good health, gender equality and inclusive development.
  • Encourage responsible consumption, environmental protection and sustainable resource utilisation.
  • Promote awareness of individual, institutional and community responsibilities in achieving the SDGs.

Key Areas of Learning

The course covers important themes associated with the Sustainable Development Goals, including:

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students are expected to:

  • Understand the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their targets.
  • Recognise the interconnected social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability.
  • Identify sustainability challenges at local, national and global levels.
  • Appreciate the importance of responsible citizenship and sustainable practices.
  • Understand how individual and collective efforts contribute to achieving the SDGs.

By incorporating a dedicated SDG course into the undergraduate Arts and Science curriculum, VMRF (DU) provides students with structured opportunities to learn about sustainability beyond their discipline-specific subjects. The course encourages students to connect academic knowledge with real-world challenges and develop an understanding of their responsibilities as future professionals and citizens.

This initiative reflects the University's commitment to promoting sustainability awareness, strengthening education for sustainable development and preparing graduates to contribute towards the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
