Education for Sustainable Development in the Wider Community

Background and Institutional Commitment

Nagapattinam is a coastal region in Tamil Nadu where fishing is a major livelihood activity. The region is vulnerable to cyclones and other natural disasters and was severely affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. The disaster resulted in significant loss of life, displacement and long-term social and economic challenges for many families. Children who lost parental care or experienced family disruption continue to require sustained support, particularly in relation to their health, nutrition, education and psychosocial well-being.

SOS Children's Villages has been supporting children and families in the Puducherry region since 2008. Through its child-care and family-strengthening initiatives, the organisation works to provide a supportive environment for children and young people who need care and protection.

Recognising the importance of extending healthcare and health education beyond the institutional setting, Vinayaka Mission's Medical College (VMMC), under Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation (Deemed to be University) undertakes community-oriented outreach initiatives in collaboration with SOS Children's Villages. These programmes aim to address the health and well-being needs of children and young residents through awareness sessions, preventive health education and community engagement.

1. Mental Health Awareness Programme at SOS Balagram

VMMC, VMRF (DU), organised a Mental Health Awareness Programme at SOS Balagram to promote emotional well-being and mental health awareness among children and young residents.

The programme focused on the importance of recognising emotional and psychological concerns, expressing feelings constructively and developing positive interpersonal relationships. Through interactive discussions and group-based activities, participants were encouraged to understand the importance of mental well-being, positive thinking and healthy coping strategies.

The session also highlighted the importance of seeking help during psychological distress, reducing the stigma associated with mental health concerns and building supportive relationships with peers and trusted adults.

2. Substance Abuse Awareness Programme at SOS Children’s Village, Nagapattinam

VMMC, VMRF (DU), conducted an Awareness Session on Substance Abuse under the Family Strengthening Programme at SOS Children’s Village, Nagapattinam. The programme aimed to educate children and participants about the harmful consequences of alcohol, tobacco and drug use and to encourage informed, healthy decision-making.

The session explained the physical and psychological consequences of substance abuse and its effects on family relationships and society. Participants were sensitised to the importance of self-awareness, resisting negative peer influence, adopting healthy habits and seeking guidance from responsible adults. The programme also emphasised the role of family and community support in prevention and early intervention.

Contribution to Sustainable Development

Through these educational outreach initiatives, VMRF (DU) extends relevant health knowledge to beneficiaries beyond its campus and supports community awareness and well-being.

The programmes contribute particularly to:

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Promoting mental health awareness, substance abuse prevention and healthy behaviour.
  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: Extending health-related educational awareness and learning opportunities to the wider community.
  • SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities: Supporting access to health education among children and young residents in a community-care setting.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthening community engagement through collaboration with SOS Children’s Villages.
