Education for SDGs commitment to meaningful education

Education for Sustainable Development Integrated Across the Curriculum

Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (Deemed to be University) is committed to integrating sustainability principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its academic curriculum. The University promotes meaningful sustainability education by connecting disciplinary knowledge with global challenges and encouraging students to understand their role in achieving sustainable development.

The University's approach to SDG education combines discipline-specific curriculum content with mandatory courses that develop environmental awareness and understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals. Students are introduced to sustainability-related concepts through their respective academic programmes, enabling them to recognise the contribution of their chosen disciplines towards addressing social, economic and environmental challenges.

Integration of SDGs Across Academic Disciplines

VMRF (DU) encourages the integration of relevant SDGs into different academic disciplines according to their subject areas and learning outcomes.

Engineering Programmes – Innovation, Sustainable Industry and Clean Energy

Engineering education incorporates subjects and learning areas related to technological innovation, sustainable infrastructure, energy efficiency and renewable energy. These areas are aligned with:

  • SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy: Renewable energy technologies, solar energy systems and energy efficiency.
  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: Technological advancement, industrial innovation and sustainable infrastructure.

Medical and Health Sciences Programmes – Health and Well-being

Medical and health sciences education contributes directly to improving health outcomes and promoting well-being. Through academic learning and professional training, students develop knowledge and skills relevant to:

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Disease prevention, healthcare delivery, patient care, public health and health promotion.
  • SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation: Understanding the relationship between water quality, sanitation and public health, where included in relevant curricula.

Arts and Science Programmes – Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

Arts and Science programmes provide opportunities to understand the social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainable development. Students are encouraged to examine global challenges, responsible citizenship, equality, environmental protection and sustainable development through their academic learning.

A separate mandatory course on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is provided for undergraduate students in Arts and Science programmes. The course introduces the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the 17 SDGs, their objectives and targets, and the importance of individual and collective action towards achieving sustainable development.

Mandatory Environmental Sciences Course Across All Undergraduate Programmes

VMRF (DU) provides a mandatory Environmental Sciences course for students across all undergraduate programmes. The course establishes a common foundation in environmental awareness and sustainability education, irrespective of students' academic specialisation.

The course addresses environmental challenges and responsible practices, including:

  • Ecosystems, biodiversity and ecological balance.
  • Conservation and sustainable utilisation of natural resources.
  • Environmental pollution and waste management.
  • Climate change and environmental protection.
  • Renewable energy and sustainable resource management.
  • Environmental responsibilities and public awareness.

This common course enables students from different disciplines to understand environmental concerns and appreciate the importance of sustainable practices in their professional and personal lives.

Dedicated Mandatory Course on Sustainable Development Goals

In addition to the Environmental Sciences course, undergraduate Arts and Science students undertake a separate mandatory course on the Sustainable Development Goals. This course provides focused learning on the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the interconnected nature of its 17 goals.

It familiarises students with global sustainability priorities, including poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, good health, clean energy, responsible consumption, climate action and sustainable communities. The course also encourages students to understand how their knowledge and actions can contribute to achieving the SDGs.

Institutional Approach to Sustainability Education

Through discipline-specific learning, common environmental education and dedicated SDG instruction, VMRF (DU) seeks to develop graduates who are environmentally conscious, socially responsible and aware of global sustainability challenges.

The University's approach promotes:

  • Integration of relevant SDG themes into academic subjects and programme learning outcomes.
  • Mandatory Environmental Sciences education across all undergraduate programmes.
  • Dedicated SDG education for undergraduate Arts and Science students.
  • Awareness of the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
  • Application of academic knowledge to real-world sustainability challenges.

VMRF (DU) recognises education as a key driver of sustainable development. By connecting academic disciplines with relevant Sustainable Development Goals and providing mandatory courses in Environmental Sciences and SDGs, the University seeks to equip students with the knowledge and awareness required to contribute to a sustainable future.

The University continues to strengthen sustainability-oriented education and encourage students across disciplines to become responsible professionals and active contributors to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
